Cold and Flu Prevention for Seniors: 9 Ways to Stay Healthy This Flu Season
Well, folks, it's here, the dreaded flu season. However, there is no need to panic. Here are some helpful tips to prevent you from getting sick and what to do once you are sick.
First and foremost, let's make sure we are up-to-date on our vaccines. These can include the flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines. Vaccines can prevent you from becoming severely ill and are a great way to keep you and your loved ones safe. However, you should speak to your doctor and see what is best recommended for you.
Hygiene and cleanliness are some things to keep in mind as well. Washing one's hands and cleaning surfaces that are commonly used are important. These can be good ways to prevent the spread of germs. Commonly touched surfaces can include countertops, tables, doorknobs, and light switches. The frequency these areas should be cleaned ultimately is up to each household. For example, if you have guests over, then it is probably a good idea to clean and sanitize once they leave. If you or someone in your household has a weakened immune system, then it is probably a good idea to clean more frequently.
Other ways to help prevent getting sick can include wearing a mask and having smaller get-togethers or having them outside. Try avoiding being around people who are sick, as well as touching your face. If you have certain health conditions that weaken your immune system, it's probably a good idea to ask your doctor what precautions to take. Lastly, make sure you are taking care of yourself by eating and sleeping well.
On the off chance that you do get sick, here are some helpful tips. The number one thing you should do is stay home and rest. Stay hydrated and ask your doctor what over-the-counter medications you can take to help with symptoms. (Note: some over-the-counter medications can affect current medications you take, so it's important to speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking anything new.) Saltwater gargles, humidifiers, and honey can be helpful in relieving cough and sore throats. Try to keep track of how long you have been sick. If you have been sick for more than 7-10 days or your symptoms are severe, it's best to contact a doctor. But in general, if you have questions or concerns, it's always a good idea to contact a health professional.
