We've all heard the famous phrase “follow your passion,” but we’re never really told how to find it. It can be hard to find our passions with everything going on in our lives and having high expectations. But did you know some of our passions can be found through our hobbies? Yes, those activities we usually save for the weekends or when we have free time, can help us become passionate and find purpose in our lives.
Now, before we begin, we should probably know the differences between a hobby and a passion. They have some similarities but have some key differences as well.
A hobby is often described as an activity we do during our free time. We do this activity for fun and may not push ourselves to be perfect at it. Hobbies can also change often, and don't always awaken strong emotions in us.
A passion is often time-consuming and can create a feeling of contentment. Passions are often connected to our beliefs and tend to make us feel motivated and excited. They can also help us go outside our comfort zone and become a part of who we are.
Now that we know the difference between the two, how do we find our passion? We can start by finding out what piques our interest; this can help us research hobbies that connect to those interests. Looking back at our day is also another helpful way to find passions or hobbies. Are there certain times of the day we are excited for? Or perhaps are there certain topics we get excited to talk about? Those around us can also help us figure out our passions. Have those around you noticed things you are good at or do often? Perhaps there are things you see others do that inspire you? All of these are great places to start when trying to find your passions.
Once you have an idea of your interests, try different things that are connected to them. These can include joining classes, reading books, watching videos, or meeting up with people with similar interests. Any hobby can lead you to your passion. Whether it's creating art, exercising, cooking, etc, they can all find a way to give us purpose in our lives.
There may be times when our passions may overwhelm us because we are struggling to learn or understand something. However, it's important to understand that our passions are constantly growing with us. Therefore, we shouldn't feel bad if we struggle with certain parts. It takes time and patience to pursue our passions. Be patient with yourself, and most important of all, have fun.
