Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It's October, which means it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a health campaign orchestrated every year internationally to bring awareness and teach people about this disease. Stay tuned to learn more about this month and what you can do to help or participate.
Let's first start by understanding the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast Cancer is a disease that affects 2.4 million women worldwide, but it can also affect men. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, in the U.S., there are currently over 4 million breast cancer survivors. It is estimated that 382,640 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. this year alone. It is also stated that 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes. Knowing how many people are at risk, it is important for everyone to have some knowledge of symptoms, tests, and treatments for breast cancer. This is one of the reasons why Breast Cancer Awareness Month is so important. For more information on types of breast cancer, risk factors, and more, click here.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month not only aims to make people aware of breast cancer but also how to detect it earlier, risk factors, how often to take breast cancer screenings, finding resources, helping raise funds for research, and helping those currently going through breast cancer.
Now onto things we can do during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
There are many ways to show our support during this month. Some examples may include donating to foundations that help people living with breast cancer and breast cancer survivors. Donating to foundations that help fund breast cancer research is another great way to show your support. Joining fundraising walks such as Strides is a great way to show support, and you can do it with friends and family. Taking the time to share resources and encouragement is another great way to show support. You can also check in on those around you who have been affected by breast cancer. (Note: Some people may find this month triggering, so it's important to respect their feelings and boundaries.)
Some things you can do for yourself this month include educating yourself about breast cancer and how it can affect someone's life. Making the decision to schedule a mammogram and encourage those around you to do so as well. Joining communities to connect or ask questions is also a good idea.
Regardless of how you choose to participate in this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the most important things are to bring awareness, educate, and support.
